#kudmis..tribal arts and culture an overview

Jharkhand as well as our country is known for its rich tribal groups, tribal heritage of arts and culture.
among these  several indigenous tribal groups ' Kudmis' are one of those who are fighting for their tribal identity. Many scholars opined that kudmi tribe  as one of the first settler community. They are regarded as the first one to start growing paddy and other crops such as ragi , kodo, sarguja, etc.
Since the beginning of civilization, the diversified arts and culture forms generated and preserved by the kudmi community of Jharkhand have continued to evince their fantastic creative magnificence

It is evident from kudmis still existing practice of  " thirteen festivals in twelve months", theirs folklore and rituals.
Kudmi tribal community dwelling in region of Jharkhand, west Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Chhattisgarh and some parts of Bihar has their own customary laws.

Kudmi are enlisted as aboriginals, primitive tribe and scheduled tribe in the gazettes' of India up to 1950.
Kudmi community follow and practice "  Totems and taboos" like other tribal groups. There is no place of Idol worship in this community. Their all rituals , dieties, festivals, and worship are related and attached with sowing and harvesting cycle of paddy crops.
Kudmis are totemic and have 81 totemic groups and some subgroups. They are non vegetarian as they worship their deities by sacrificing cock, goat, duck, sheep, pig, pegeons etc. to make them happy and showering their thanks and love for better harvest.

Apart from these significant brilliance, from the prospective of aesthetics, their traditional Kudmali arts and cultural forms have played an instrumental role in tribal unity, crystalizing social solidarity and fortifying tribal cultural heritage and traditional values.

But with the passage of time and advent of modern age and globalisation we have witnessed a lot of changes and hindunization in this community too. Which resulted in the emergence of synthetic homogeneous macro -culture.
under the threat and influence of such a voracious all pervasive macro culture the strongly unified kudmi culture and community is suffering a bit. But at the same time Bhuvneshwar Mahto  ( myself )   is proud of being a kudmi and I appreciate and apprais that,  it is praisable that under such critical condition kudmi community is still able to protect and preserve their rich culture and heritage.
Concluding is that kudmi are ever present tribal groups of Jharkhand possessing a richer, greater and prosperous traditional and cultural heritages  .
